It was one week before the book went to print.  Not a single endorsement had come through.  Of course, there had hardly been time.  The manuscript had just been completed and how could I expect a person to offer an endorsement without even seeing the product?

“No worries,” my publisher said.  “The book will stand on its own merit.”

Though I knew the content was good, the possibility screamed “First time author” in my ears.

My agent and I had made several calls, but it was the middle of a blazing hot summer.  Perhaps everyone was on vacation.  I resigned myself to looking like a newbie.

The day before my book went to print fate intervened.  (I use that term loosely.  What is fate if not divine intervention?)

First my agent called to say LeAnn Thieman, coauthor of Chicken Soup for the Nurse’s Soul, had submitted her endorsement.  On top of that I received word that CNN had approved an endorsement by their senior medical correspondent, Elizabeth Cohen, MPH.  She had just written a book herself entitled The Empowered Patient and knew what it was to worry about the birth of her literary baby.

And so I needn’t have worried.  Isn’t that somewhere in the Beatitudes?  Here are the endorsements they were kind enough to supply.

“Dr. Cynthia Koelker gives us the inside scoop on how to save money at the doctor’s office and still get great care.  Even if you have insurance, 101 Ways to Save Money on Health Care will still help you save your hard-earned cash.” – Elizabeth Cohen, MPH, CNN senior medical correspondent, author of The Empowered Patient

“In simple language, Dr. Koelker shares decades of experience to help people of all ages partner with their doctors to get excellent care and save money.  It’s like having a book written for you by your very own doctor.” – LeAnn Thieman, LPN, and coauthor of both editions of Chicken Soup for the Nurse’s Soul.
